This intriguing portrait in the school of Hans Memling (c. 1430-1494) depicts an elderly woman with a bee, combining the meticulous realism of Early Netherlandish painting with enigmatic symbolism. Memling was one of the greatest masters of 15th-century Bruges, and works from his school continue his tradition of serene, psychologically penetrating portraiture.
