After Midnight at the Eldorado, An Original Work by Elliott Best

She sits alone at a crowded café table, perfectly composed beneath a pale blue hat and a sweep of powder-pink fur. A cigarette burns between lacquered red fingertips. Coffee cools beside her. In the ashtray, the remains of the evening gather one cigarette at a time. Behind her, Berlin disappears into shadow. Men in hats move through the smoky room, fragments of signage appear through the haze, and a poster for the Eldorado promises another nightly revue. Yet the woman remains separate from it all, looking directly beyond the picture plane with an expression that refuses to explain itself. After Midnight at the Eldorado is an original Elliott Best work inspired by the nightlife, portraiture and uneasy glamour of Weimar Berlin.

The Face Behind the Performance

The subject appears immaculate, but not untouched by the night. Her sculpted curls, dramatic makeup and tailored clothing suggest a carefully constructed public identity. Beneath that polish, however, there is something more private. Her gaze is direct without being inviting. She may be waiting for someone, recovering from a performance or simply taking a rare moment alone. The painting leaves the answers unresolved. That ambiguity gives the portrait its emotional power. 

Berlin in the Background

The legendary Eldorado became associated with Berlin’s vibrant queer nightlife during the final years of the Weimar Republic. Its revues, performers and mixed audiences came to represent a city experimenting with identity, visibility and personal freedom. Here, the Eldorado is not recreated as spectacle. It survives in fragments: a faded poster, anonymous figures, reflected lettering, cigarette smoke and low café light. The setting feels both immediate and unstable, as though this world could disappear the moment the lights are turned off.

This work was created as part of our Weimar Berlin collection, exploring the people who lived, performed and reinvented themselves during one of the twentieth century’s most culturally daring periods. Its richly worked surface, layered brushwork and muted café palette were designed to evoke the character of an aged European portrait while preserving the immediacy of a contemporary original.

Curator’s Note: She is dressed to be seen, but her expression belongs entirely to herself.That is what makes this portrait so compelling. Around her, Berlin continues its restless nightly performance. She has stepped out of it for just a moment, leaving us to wonder who she is when no one else is watching.
