"Saint Panteleimon, Patron Saint of Healing"
This beautiful Russian Orthodox icon depicts Saint Panteleimon (or Pantaleon), venerated as the patron saint of physicians and midwives. The inscription "Великомученик Пантелеимонъ" translates to "Great Martyr Panteleimon," honoring this beloved saint who treated the sick free of charge and was martyred around 305 A.D. for his Christian faith.
Born in Nicomedia (modern-day Turkey) to a pagan father and Christian mother, Panteleimon studied medicine and became physician to Emperor Maximian. After witnessing miraculous healings, he converted to Christianity and devoted himself to treating the poor without payment, relying on prayer and faith. His charitable work and Christian witness led to his martyrdom during Diocletian's persecution.
