Title: Oh, Donna Clara…
Style: Art Deco, Jazz Age, European cabaret
Subject: Reclining woman with fan and jewellery
Restoration: Elliott Best Gallery

A Woman Between Music and Dream

Reclining beneath the sweep of an enormous fan, a glamorous woman appears suspended between wakefulness and sleep. Her eyes are half closed. Her jewellery glimmers against dark hair. The curve of her green dress cuts boldly across the composition while scarlet, cream, black, and deep green create a scene that feels theatrical, perfumed, and faintly dangerous.

Decadence in a Modern Key

Her expression is central to the mystery. She may be listening to distant music, drifting into sleep, or simply withdrawing from the world around her. Nothing is explained completely, and that ambiguity gives the work its hypnotic quality. The result feels both elegant and slightly narcotic: a private moment from a lost world of late-night salons, smoky cabarets, and whispered conversations.

Her enormous fan, ornamental hairpieces, dark beads, stylized makeup, and lacquered colours create an atmosphere of cultivated fantasy. There are echoes of cabaret posters, fashion illustration, theatrical programmes, and the fascination with exotic visual motifs that shaped European design during the period.

The Elliott Best Restoration Signature™

Our restoration preserves the original composition, stylized linework, typography, and distinctive period character while improving clarity, balance, and visual impact. What we restored:

  • Refined edges and cleaner graphic forms
  • Revitalized red, green, cream, and black tones
  • Improved definition in the face, jewellery, fan, and hair ornaments
  • Balanced contrast across the reclining figure and background
  • Preservation of the original printed texture and Art Deco character

Its slight texture, simplified forms, dramatic colour blocks, and stylized features remain essential to its identity. The restoration allows those elements to appear with greater confidence while retaining the feeling of a rare period print.

Curator’s Note: Oh, Donna Clara… feels like the final scene of an evening; the music has softened. The room has emptied. The fan is still open, the jewellery remains in place, and the woman lies somewhere between performance and private reverie. It is glamorous, mysterious, and just a little decadent: Art Deco not at noon, but after midnight.
