Georgian mastery meets Canadian wilderness

He stands as if he has always been there, and always will be. Dark eyes calm and ancient, a great shed antler lying at his feet, the bulk of him utterly at ease in the wilderness that is his domain. Monarch of the Boreal is an Elliott Best Original in the school of George Stubbs: precise, reverential, and alive with the quiet power of an animal painted at the height of its dignity.

The First Moose in England Came from Quebec

In 1770 a young bull moose arrived in England, sent by the Governor of Quebec to the Duke of Richmond. The anatomist William Hunter dispatched George Stubbs to Goodwood to paint it, and the greatest animal painter of his age gave a Canadian yearling the same anatomical precision and quiet respect he gave to champion racehorses. Because the animal was too young to carry antlers, Stubbs set a full-grown pair in the foreground. This work carries that meeting of Georgian eye and northern wilderness forward.
