An hour south of Johannesburg, in the early morning quiet of the Leopard Song Game Reserve, I was out on the game truck when the vehicle stopped at the edge of a large lake. Across the water, barely breaking the surface, a hippopotamus held its ground — eyes level, ears alert, watching.
