A Transatlantic Expression of the Jazz Age

Although Madam Satan was produced in Hollywood, its visual language belongs to the same restless world explored in our Weimar Berlin exhibition. The masked heroine, angular typography, expressive illustration and fascination with aviation reflect an international culture transformed by nightlife, new technologies and changing ideas about identity.

From Berlin’s cabaret stages to Hollywood’s dream factories, women were appearing as mysterious, independent and theatrical figures who controlled how they were seen. Here, the heroine is not presented as passive or delicate. She commands the composition.

Modernity, Fantasy and Controlled Chaos

The poster’s sweeping diagonal lines create a sense of acceleration. Aircraft cut across the composition, parachutes descend through the background and vivid red brushwork suggests both celebration and catastrophe.

At its centre sits the masked Madam Satan, poised and composed amid the chaos. Her sleek black costume and dramatic profile make her appear part socialite, part aviator and part mythological creature. She is the still point inside a world rushing toward the future.

Curator’s Note: Few posters capture the thrill and anxiety of modern life quite like this one. Everything appears to be moving, burning, falling or flying, except for Madam Satan herself. Masked, elegant and entirely in command, she looks as though the future belongs to her.
