The Mystery Resolved — An Elliott Best Original After Gainsborough

Limited Edition of 100. Hand-numbered and signed by the Elliott Best artist. Certificate of Authenticity included. The master file will be permanently destroyed upon completion of the edition.

One of Art History's Great Unfinished Questions

Painted around 1750, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews is one of Thomas Gainsborough's most celebrated works — and one of the great mysteries in British art. More than 275 years later, one intriguing detail remains unresolved: the empty space on Mrs. Andrews' lap. Gainsborough left it blank, and the truth of what he intended has been lost to history.

For generations, art historians have debated what belonged there. A game bird from the day's hunt. A child. A piece of embroidery. A fashionable accessory. No one knows. And that open question has made this painting endlessly fascinating — a masterpiece with a secret at its heart.

In conversation with Thomas Gainsborough, we chose the pheasant.

Not because we know it was his intention — but because, after living with the painting and restoring its remarkable beauty, it felt like the most natural conclusion to the story he began over two and a half centuries ago. Rather than rewriting history, we hope to bring viewers a little closer to the artist's original vision, while respectfully adding our own interpretation to one of art history's most enduring conversations.

Brilliance Recovered

Our studio restoration also revives the luminosity that time gradually concealed. The luminous blue silk of Mrs. Andrews' dress, the warm harvest fields, the dramatic Suffolk summer sky, and the rich textures of the English landscape have all been carefully restored — centuries of darkened varnish and tonal drift corrected to reveal the vibrancy Gainsborough originally achieved. Printed on premium archival museum stock for a presentation worthy of the original.

Elliott Best Limited Edition

  • Hand-numbered — Your print bears its unique edition number (e.g. 47/100), permanently identifying it within the edition
  • Hand-signed by the Studio artist — A personal signature from the artist who completed Gainsborough's unfinished vision
  • Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity — Documenting the edition number, the artist's signature, the edition size, and the commitment to destroy the master file
  • Guaranteed finite — Upon completion of all 100 copies, the master file will be permanently and irrevocably destroyed. No further prints will ever be made.

A talking point for collectors of British art and Georgian Old Masters.
