Léon Bakst's Terror Antiquus (1908) is an oil on canvas painting depicting the destruction of an ancient city and its inhabitants, using symbols to represent the apocalyptic nature of the modern age.
The work, which features elements like the Lion Gate at Mycenae and the Acropolis at Athens, was inspired by Bakst's 1907 visit to Greece and was shown with success at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and awarded a gold medal in Brussels in 1910. The painting is housed in the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.
